I wonder how mockery compares to being cast out of society? I suppose mockery simply precedes being cast out...

For sure cast out does create mockery. But the only way to do so is removing status. So a man like Shaw thrived. He could not be toppled.

Closer than we suspect to Krakatoa.

Paul Valéry - The Crisis of the Mind

First Letter

We later civilizations... we too now know that we are mortal.

We had long heard tell of whole worlds that had vanished, of empires sunk without a trace, gone down with all their men and all their machines into the unexplorable depths of the centuries, with their gods and their laws, their academies and their sciences pure and applied, their grammars and their dictionaries, their Cla**ics, their Romantics, and their Symbolists, their critics and the critics of their critics... We were aware that the visible earth is made of ashes, and that ashes signify something. Through the obscure depths of history we could make out the phantoms of great ships laden with riches and intellect; we could not count them. But the disasters that had sent them down were, after all, none of our affair.

Elam, Ninevah, Babylon were but beautiful vague names, and the total ruin of those worlds had as little significance for us as their very existence. But France, England, Russia... these too would be beautiful names. Lusitania too, is a beautiful name. And we see now that the abyss of history is deep enough to hold us all. We are aware that a civilization has the same fragility as a life. The circumstances that could send the works of Keats and Baudelaire to join the works of Menander are no longer inconceivable; they are in the newspapers. That is not all. The searing lesson is more complete still. It was not enough for our generation to learn from its own experience how the most beautiful things and the most ancient, the most formidable and the best ordered, can perish by accident; in the realm of thought, feeling, and common sense, we witnessed extraordinary phenomena: paradox suddenly become fact, and obvious fact brutally belied.

Mount Whitney is the most sophisticated Command, Control, Communications, Computer, and Intelligence (C4I) ship ever commissioned,[4] She incorporates various elements of the most advanced C4I equipment and gives the embarked Joint Task Force Commander the capability to effectively command all units under their command.

The U.S. 6th Fleet Blue Ridge-class command and control ship #USSMountWhitney (LCC 20) departed Gaeta, Italy, Oct. 18, 2023, in support of U.S. operations in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Mount Whitney can transmit and receive large amounts of secure data to and from any point on earth through HF, UHF, VHF, and SHF (satellite) communications channels. This electronic technology enables the Joint Intelligence Center and Joint Operations Center to provide the most timely intelligence and operational support available in the Navy.

We have our most advanced Aircraft Carrier and our most sophisticated Intel ship there now.

Do you believe that we will have a civil war within the next 12 months the Prince asked sitting down at the dinner table in the Lodge of the Maltese Knights.

His breakfast companion Lord Mephisto responds "I most certainly do believe that we will have a civil war. I think that only 10 million people are even close to being prepared for it and willing to use lethal force against looters and tyrants when they come. When it comes, those who you think are normal people will in fact become as the other animals to try and survive, they could have prepared but they choose debt, big trucks and houses for status, their end will be the same as the looters. Things will change over night, you will go to sleep one night, then wake up to a different America, third world war zone."
