Questions on Psychoanalysis posed to the Internationalist Communist Left

The Internationalist Communist Left published very little on psychoanalysis, or, for that matter, on psychology in general. Yet, the impact of psychoanalysis on society has been enormous: it can even be characterized as one of the main ideologies of the Twentieth Century. It has directly affected the private lives of hundreds of millions of families in the period around the Second World War; it has influenced business policies and the world of marketing and publicity – it even inspired art and literature. It added a whole new vocabulary to commonly used language.

Through the intermediary of “mass-psychology” it also largely contributed to a redefinition of how to manage recalcitrant populations and make them behave like enthusiast and responsible citizens subordinate to the national state. War propaganda became more efficient in recruiting cannon fodder by more persuasive techniques: manipulation of the “unconscious” and playing on “instincts”.

Ample use of it has been made by Fascists, Stalinists as well as Democrats. It was in the period in which the working class was most defeated and mobilised behind the imperialist flags that this ideology could live its moments of glory while it tended to break apart after the 1960’s.

I will introduce two phrases here at the onset, the first is that of a “kill switch”. This first is well known and the second phrase comes to mind as a slightly gentler option, and that is one of “selective decimation”.

I am writing from the standpoint of managing a scientific chronology for close to three decades now; the expression here is not solely that of intuition and personal perspective.

There is now a record of more than 400 research papers along with an estimated 5000 pages of laboratory notes that paints a completely consistent portrait of environmental and biological transformation of this planet. The record has been available for all to examine, repeat, refute or confirm. No formal process of those steps has taken place and we are left, together as a species, to frame our understanding of what has taken place and what shall take place in our future.

I am increasingly of a mindset that it will be left to future generations to determine if this retrospective will ever take place. It may or may not happen.

I think that this paper can be kept relatively simple, as the complex work that precedes it has been completed and written.

The meaning of a “kill switch” is not hard to envision, but the scale of it might be. Conceptually and theoretically, it would appear that a “kill switch” for the human race now exists. It is one of our questions as a species if we would like to confront that potential reality or not.

From the evidence that has progressively accumulated, it would seem that delivery of sufficient current (apparently quite minimal) into the human race on a global scale could conceivably annihilate the human species. The mechanism would be the transformation of the blood as outlined in this paper series. We may not wish to entertain the prospect within the comfort range of the human psyche, but I would argue that we must. Circumstances have been unattended now for far too long to escape the prospect.

Although unwitnessed in our human history, a global Electromagnetic Pulse of sufficient magnitude might be one mechanism of such extinction. History tells us that extinction of a species does not necessarily mean the extinction of life, but I doubt that we are in position to make that determination right now.

When the early German Romantic writers and critics, a group that included Friedrich and August Wilhelm Schlegel, Friedrich von Hardenberg (known by the pen name Novalis), and Ludwig Tieck, began taking stock of the new literary approach they were creating, it is little wonder that they saw themselves at the forefront of a movement which had the potential to change not only literature, but learning, society, and the individual forever. Die Welt muss romantisiert werden (The world must be romanticized), wrote Novalis. Guided by a potent vision born out of the deliberate rejection of Rationalism and Neoclassicism, the Romantics envisioned a literature of the heart instead of the head, a literature that would celebrate Nature and the Spirit and above all else the Imagination. In the climate of the French Revolution; of the Idealism of Kant and Fichte that seemed to bring Rationalism to its knees; the rise of German nationalism; and a literary world dominated by pre-Weimar Goethe, the Romantics believed they were destined to usher in a poetic Golden Age, where science and religion, art and philosophy, society and the individual, would all be reconciled in a poetic synthesis based on the alchemy of the imagination. Calling themselves Romantics in honor of the great medieval legends written in the vernacular, it is no surprise that the “märchen” (the German equivalent of “fairy tale”) came to be adopted as their special literary form. Gordon Birrell, in his introduction to German Literary Fairy Tales, writes:

It was not until the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century, in the context of German Romanticism, that the folk fairy tale was first acknowledged as oral literature of the highest order. Significantly, the endorsement of the folk tale went hand in hand with the creation of a new and far more ambitious variety of literary fairy tale, a narrative invention of such extraordinary appeal that it became, for a brief period, the very centerpiece of Romantic literary theory.
