I think the issue is not a return but a virtuality. Man changed in Christendom and civilized himself inside this god man idea. And at the same time only the surface was washed. Cults of all persuasions never ceased to exist in Christendom or outside of it. What is happening is not embracing of a creed forgotten but embracement of the creed invented to replace Christianity.
A precedent is in Egypt where Alexander's General Ptolemy invented a new religion of Serapis.
