Refarding Galileo- it is a symbol, just in my opinion not the right symbol. I agree with Rene Guenon that there is knowledge which should not be released to masses. The popularization of science, art etc, like everyone should have knowledge(or the illusion of knowledge) of everything is false and dangerous. The keepers of the secrets should be the ones with authority- and real authority comes from God.
I would choose as a symbol and a model-Jeanne d'Arc and her political process, she faced both clerical and secular powers. We always should follow her when in doubt: God first served- she said, God as the only authority she served and died for.
Yes, we are closer to the atheistic violence of the bolshevics. I grew up in Romania, a totalitarian country, until the age of 21. And I am aware how peoples can be destroyed, in totalitarian regimes- Hannah Arendt explained this better that I can summarize here in Origins of totalitarianism (1951), in my opinion still valid today. But the kind of totalitarianism we face today is more dangerous than the brutal nazism and stalinism. Because the propaganda is more subtle, and the majority lost any sense of considering life a quest in search of eternity. But we all have to give an answer in the end to the great question which is life. With my best wishes.
We have not returned to Galileo time. The Church(the Church from Galileo time, what we have today is just a shadow) in fact gave a lesson in his case that any knowledge is not good in itself, but only if it adds meaning to the human life, and human life can find a meaning only in a world of human beings, connected as creatures of the Only and Same God. A world structured by authority, tradition and religion.
The science that Galileo was the initiator, the science which followed its own path in western civilization, brought us the cure of TB but also the nuclear weapons. Scientific dissidents are indeed ostracized, medical doctors are asked to kill patients, not to cure them. This happened because science is not science anymore, knowledge for knowledge itself has rapidly vanished; it has become a tool to create products, more and more products, as human desire has no end, and then even this goal was forgotten- a mascarade took over, people interested only in making money started using the term science and the progress pseudo-religion to convince us that we owe them our lives. The fantasy world they created where they are almighty gods is just an illusion. Power is not violence. Power is not money. Power is the radical honesty with ourselves.
Fair enough. However the Maid of Orleans arose before science stood on it's ground about Knowledge. She was the great warrior of Faith. Do we have a faith war with Covid? Yes we do. Is the struggle against the Heresy Hunters religious? Not formally so since the story frames itself by science. Once we move into militant struggle I would say we have our Maid. For Automatic Earth, a secular economic publication we are not yet arrived.
