There are a lot of obstacles to building, more in coastal California than here, for sure, and thirty-five is a good age. I wouldn't recommend starting from scratch. Find a really old one to rehabilitate. You can find them with farmable land for less than the cost of a standard car on the prairie. Detroit, too, but it's harder to do stuff yourself in a city. You need to be not stupid and not afraid, and if it has been there for 120 years, you just need to not make it worse.
