To laugh, to cry, name that tune

I had just sipped my coffee when I saw the post and I laughed in surprise and amusement. “Why not,” I said to myself, “why not.” Patriots one and all need a fighting song, but old guys like me recall other fighting songs. You know maybe an updated Country Joe “Feel Like I’m Fixin’ to Die Rag—”Give me an F…” or maybe “U.S. Blues,” or “We Won’t Be Fooled Again,” ” or “Born in the USA” by Springsteen. Sure I could name a few others, but my drift is the singing of a song associated with stirring feelings of belonging to a nation under attack to rally the drivers and bless their movement is intended for symbolism. Indeed, I am sure a National Guardsman clubbing the head will recall the tune and pause between following orders and disobedience, some line like “O say can you see our flag is still there” so moving that she takes the knee.

In the 60’s I thought the Protest movement was stupid. Not what they protested, but the organization of the protests and their strategy. Fast forward to my decision to be done with Americans and their useless symbolic gestures after Gulf War 1. The facts sadly are we had our good luck and now two centuries of squandering it in search of monsters to destroy bring us to this day where hats in hand we beg the Monster State to not destroy us, as it obviously is, down to babes in arms. Stockholm Syndrome writ large. Hostages to a creed outworn, American Automatons put in motion by feelings of desperation but not THAT desperate eh, not so desperate as to imitate the Molly McGuires, or rise in rebellion, but symbolism marches for us and in our stead like the Angel of Mons leads us to victory. Suppose instead the Truckers simply went on strike, asked others to go on strike, ….but no. No instead lead by the nose they drive in a mighty convoy to D.C. announcing well in advance of course so no one is surprised and giving the State plenty of time to use them to advance driverless vehicles, implement more draconian police state actions. Mandates will come back strong if Democrats keep power thanks to the need to keep Emergency power and odds are good that no matter who wins the Mid-Terms (if they happen) the dream of personal autonomy will be deferred by testing constantly for a dangerous variant.

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
