A What If

What if is of course the way we write Speculative Fiction. So then I see world events from my What If position.

PCR thinks Russia is running a great risk of nuclear war in Europe. “Russia was disadvantaged, because Putin and the Russian liberals overestimated the humanity of the West.  Now Putin says that “we may have realized too late” that Russia was being deceived.  Nevertheless, he is still willing to negotiate and to be deceived again.  Russian liberals, alienated from the Soviet government, were easy victims of American propaganda presenting the US as a light unto the world.  This has had a disarming effect on the Russian ability to comprehend the West. “ https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2022/12/11/the-prospect-of-nuclear-war-is-getting-too-close-for-comfort/

Now we pause here and ask what evidence is he relying upon in his thinking about Russia and it is his former Cold War training. Importantly this training did not encompass What If outside narrow agreed upon parameters. For instance in his thought he ignores the shadows and sticks to the bright noon sun. For instance, why would the Biden Administration reliably run by China who is communist not be filled with those Hirelings who follow orders from Beijing? Why would let us say people in power positions continue to escalate in the Ukraine to the point of nuclear war? In what wise does this benefit the power groups PCR believes run D.C.? Military spending is good of course, but mega death is bad for business. Does he really think Russia is ignoring the deepening conflict? What if on the contrary Putin needs escalation to justify total war? “The Kremlin complains endlessly but never acts.  Russia complains to the UN Security Council that weapons supplied by the West are used to hit Russian schools and homes.  Why does Russia think the Security Council cares or will do anything about it?  The real question is why does Putin by pulling Russia’s punches permit Ukraine the latitude to use the “foreign-supplied” weapons?  The Russians are too diplomatic to say “West-supplied.” Russia says there will be legal consequences for the war crimes in the future.  Why not military consequences now?  Until Putin gets serious about the war, provocations will continue their escalation.”

Another What If which frames modern history very nicely is that the collapse of the USSR ended communism. Of course this is only West of the Urals -but even China is viewed as a kind of vestigial communist state. More or less a hybrid of Asian authoritarianism and state Capitalism. Communism then died with the USSR.

Suppose this view is in Pauli’s phrase “not even wrong.” What If instead-”The greatest trick of the devil is to make you believe he doesn’t exist. Today most people believe Communism is dead. They believe the Berlin Wall came down and the USSR collapsed. They believe that China is no longer a Communist nation but a mixed market nation. And that The Great Reset for the 4th Industrial Revolution – after which “You’ll own nothing, and you’ll be happy about it” – is not, at its most basic level, world wide Communism.”
