Another Catholic thinker, Gabriel Marcel, comments that with Europe's decline after the Great War, America's prominent but abusive place in world affairs had to be recognized. He unmasked the ideological component of American foreign policy, especially the self-righteous legitimization of United States imperialism, the privileged position of the dollar, and the shallow, conformist nature of the American values imposed on the lands they dominated. American corporate imperialism fused arrogance and innocence:

Of course Marcel also said if the rigid and insensitive policies of the United States were not opposed by responsible American citizens, then America was preparing itself for the eventual rebellion of oppressed nations.

Quite ironic to think the 50 states are oppressed by being under Federal power but Covid lockups proved the truth. Responsible citizens have faith in law, in courts, in votes, in a process of fairness, and as I have written The basic fact is that the Covid but let us widen it to the Reformist Good Government civil rights movement, by remaining within the law, raises only legal issues. It is logical to make an appeal to the law by legal means. What is not logical is to use legal pleadings to confront raw injustice-as though it were a nonsense that would disappear as soon as it was pointed out. Raw injustice such as Chief Justice John Roberts threatening in his 2011 report, implying that any Congressional effort to constrain the bench by the imposition of such a code (of ethics) would violate the Constitution.  In a rather novel interpretation, the fact that the lower courts were bound by the Code of Conduct “reflects a fundamental difference between the Supreme Court and the other federal courts.”

If, as we believe, collective memory is essentially a reconstruction of the past, if it adapts the image of ancient events to the beliefs and spiritual needs of the present, knowledge of what was originally there is secondary, if not outright useless, since the reality of the past is no longer there as an immutable model to which one has to conform.
