Saving the Earth seems to be the global imperative of our time. But it is the Earth understood as a Planet, the Earth in the abstract, the Earth as a globe. Then concretely, we let the megamachine, the food industry as well as the explant factory, even of people from their land, replace the land. This is what happens with humanity: those who love humanity in general, noted both Dosteveskij and Leopardi, are usually indifferent if not hostile to the men who are close to them. They love humanity in the abstract, they loathe it concretely, to the point of replacing men with artificial creatures, genetically modified, artificial intelligences, robots and posthumans. What I called in La Cappa the world war against nature rages on from the earth and its products.

T he substitution of the earth is precisely what happens whenever the artificial is preferred to the natural, the genetically modified to the genuine, global food to food produced at zero kilometre. Instead, it is a question of defending the earth, through the principle of proximity.

Many concrete actions must be taken to relaunch agriculture, but there is a preliminary act to be carried out in our minds and hearts: to return to the land, to consider it as our natural habitat, to love and preserve our land. Roots are a primary resource for nature and the identity of peoples, the vital link between roots and fruits must be safeguarded. And in saying this I am reminded of the farmer philosopher Gustave Thibon, who loved Heaven and cultivated the Earth, and also the opposite, he transmitted his love for the earth to an ethereal thinker who lived only in the skies of thought, Simone Weil, who hosted in his farm and had his fields worked.

From there I learned that culture is worship and cultivation, that is, it is the link between heaven and earth, between the sacred and work in the fields, the ability to look up and keep your feet firmly on the ground.

We will not be able to save our cultural and natural assets, landscapes and territories without a conservative love for nature, history, tradition, the roots of both.

Italy, I have been saying this for a lifetime, is not a demographic or economic, military or technological world power, but it is the world superpower for cultural heritage and food; its primacy is in the intertwining of art and nature, between landscapes and heritage, between culture and food. It is not a question of closing oneself off in a sort of food autarky, but of giving an adequate, active, not passive response to the globalization and planetary standardization of food.

On food sovereignty, silly ironies have been wasted about the homonymous ministry, but there is also a ministry of food sovereignty in France; and even the patron of slow food, Carlo Petrini, linked to the dem, recognizes the foundation of a definition of the genre and of a battle in this key. If anything, we need to worry that there won't be just a name, a word. Food sovereignty also means protecting the principle of proximity, enhancing our agricultural and real economy, starting from the zero kilometer, activating a consequent supply chain, defending our products. And above all to love the Earth, yes, the whole Earth, but starting from one's own; love the land of the fathers and fertilize it and hand it over to the children.
